For years, we have handled SEO projects using methods that match Google’s algorithm. Now we face artificial intelligence that can think like humans. This approach will make a big difference for SEO that is optimized for search engines versus answers generated by AI.

In Indonesia, ChatGPT ranks first with 81% of AI chatbot users, followed by 15% using Perplexity, and 1.5% using Google Gemini.

For some groups, these tools are no longer used for testing but have become the main tools when looking for answers or doing research.

What is GEO and How Does it Relate to SEO?

Is it true that GEO replaces SEO?

What is GEO?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is a new method to optimize digital presence so that brands, products, or business entities can be “remembered” and “mentioned” by generative AI like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Perplexity AI.

Unlike traditional SEO that focuses on search result page rankings, GEO focuses on entity recognition—making sure AI understands and recognizes the brand’s existence in relevant contexts.

We compare this to building a reputation in a small community. Before, it was enough to just have the biggest store on the main street (ranking #1 on Google). Now, you need to be well-known by the most influential neighbors (AI models) who will recommend your business to others.

Enhancement, Not Elimination

Some opinions say that GEO will replace SEO. But actually, both actually it work together.

SEO makes sure content can be crawled, indexed, and found.

GEO builds strong entity presence in AI training datasets.

Data shows that results displayed from AI Overviews still come from web pages that are SEO-optimized. Without strong SEO basics, GEO strategy will also be weak.

Differences Between AI Search vs Traditional SEO

AI processes information by:

  1. Looking for patterns – Analyzing how a brand appears in millions of pages or documents on the internet
  2. Understanding context – Understanding relationships between entities in various contexts
  3. Trust level depends on consistency – AI judges “how trustworthy” information is by seeing how often and consistently that information appears in different places

Google’s algorithm relies on backlinks as authority indicators, so backlink quality greatly affects rankings.

AI models use a contextual authority approach where what’s needed is connecting keywords with their proper context in existing backlinks.

Training and Real-time Information

AI like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity works in two stages:

  1. Training Phase (Pre-training)
We compare this phase to a student reading millions of books, articles, and websites to “learn” about the world. AI absorbs information about various brands, products, and companies from this data. For example, ChatGPT-4 “learned” from internet data until June 2024. This means if a brand became popular after June 2024, ChatGPT might not know about it.
  2. Retrieval Phase (RAG – Retrieval Augmented Generation) – the stage of finding the latest information
When answering real-time queries, AI combines training knowledge with the latest information searched from the internet.

So from understanding how AI works, we focus on 2 things:

  1. Building Long-term Digital Footprint: Making sure the brand is already well-known on the internet so it becomes part of AI’s “lessons” in the future
  2. Making it Easy for AI when searching for latest information on news sites, industry publications, forums, knowledge graphs

However, to implement this strategy effectively, we need a structured framework, where the concept of “Retrievability” becomes the main key in GEO.

“Retrievability” Framework for GEO

  1. Recognition
Focus on how AI “knows” brands in the context of relevant industries and topics. Not just using as many backlinks as possible, but also paying attention to the quality and context of “what” those backlinks are about.
  2. Presence
Consistent brand mentions across channels and platforms. The difference from Recognition is that Presence focuses on “where” the brand is mentioned.
  3. Accessibility
How easy it is for AI to access, process, and understand information about your brand. AI can more easily process information that is structured and presented in machine-readable format.

Conclusion

  1. GEO as SEO amplifier, not replacement
Ignoring SEO fundamentals will not achieve success in GEO implementation.
  2. Building a brand requires long-term commitmentConsistency and meaningful results. Short-term tactics will provide minimal impact.
  3. Focus on quality and contextQuality of mentions and relevant context is far more important than just volume.
  4. Data as Competitive AdvantageQuality content supported by research, proprietary data, and verified insights will look more credible.
  5. Approach to relevant communitiesBeing active in communities and professional networks in an original way (not using bots or similar) is also fundamental support in this AI era.
